Ahhh Chinese takeout. One of the unsung kings of American comfort food. No really. It’s about as American as apple pie or the mac & cheese. And it’s fantastic.

It really is amazing that a twist on dishes from not Western Europe or South America or even Eastern Europe where the majority of Americans hail from can rise up in popularity and ubiquitousness as much as Chinese takeout. Forget the awesome display that the Chinese gave us at the Beijing Olympics opening ceremony as proof of the Chinese’s discipline and hard work. Just look at all of the small tiny Chinese takeout joints that are littered throughout the continental United States. All are independently owned and run. All are usually run by a single family. Yet they are all pretty much the same…with pretty much the same menu and pretty much the same system. And with seeming 100x more variety than a McDonalds.

We take it for granted but if you think abuot it it’s quite amazing. This is a pretty racially divided country. Not only that but it is also geographically divided as well. Northerners don’t know much about true Southern cooking. Even in the South some people know about creole cooking while some have no idea and no interest. There are battles over which type of BBQ, dry rub, vinegar based, sweet, sticky, spicy, etc… is better than others. Even pizza has variations including NY style, Chicago deep dish, and even St. Louis style. And people love some and not others. Grits? Most northerners will say no thank you. Raw oysters? Many in the midwest will be disgusted. But Chinese takeout? For all intents and purposes it is universally loved. The sticky sweet and sour chicken. The slightly spicy General Tso’s chicken. The greasy yet tasty pork lo mein. Gravy slathered egg foo young. Hell, even the faux Peking duck! Some of the most vocal of racists will rant and rave about hating every other race than the white race will then, sit down for a nice box of chicken fried rice. Can you imagine the KKK eating crab rangoon? I can.

And all done by small groups of families and workers. No giant corporation like the fast food giants. No overseeing organization. Just typically a Chinatown bus from NYC carrying chefs with questionable legal status to places all over this country. The news rants and raves about the latino immigrants. But the Chinese? They have managed to both integrate into our society and also at the same time, disappear. Not even become a concern. Whenever we move to a new community, we EXPECT a Chinese takeout to be there. No small feat there! Yet most of us won’t give them or this concept a second thought.

Now…to give credit where it’s due. Many of my points here are also covered by a really good book called “The Fortune Cookie Chronicles: Adventuers in the World of Chinese Food” by Jennifer 8 Lee. It’s a quick read but entertaining and sometimes even eye opening and touching. She goes from trying to find the origins of the fortune cookie (it’s Japanese!) to the behind the scenes of Chinese takeout. It’s good! Go read it!!

In the meantime I will let this digest… As good as it is…you know what it’s missing? MSG. MSG makes everything taste good. And the MSG headache? Never proven. Hell…my mom used MSG FOREVER and I’m still ok. You can still buy it by the pound in Japan and elsewhere. You all have no idea what you’re missing out on. Chinese takeout tastes good now? It’ll be better with just a bit of MSG :) :) :)

I know this isn’t a photo… I’m coming down with a cold… :( Shoot me…

Anyway, this is the screen I’m greeted with when I try to play scrabble on my Asus laptop.

Weird… I’m IN the US now!! I haven’t even taken this laptop out of the country in months! And I cleared the cache and everything… Boo to scrabble!! Oh well…at least I can still play this on my desktop and my iPod.

Sister’s New House

This is going to be a rare bilingual post.

めったにないバイリンガルのポストです。

So, today I went over to my sister and her husband’s place to take photos of their new house. A nice new house with a large first floor and an open design that I personally am fond of.

今日は妹と彼女の旦那の新しい家に写真を撮りに行きました。新しい家で一階が大きくデザイン的には結構広々していて個人的にも好みです。

After this first photo, the rest are behind the link. 8 photos in all and if you click on each photo, it will open up a larger version in a separate window.

最初の写真以外は以下のリンクの後にあります。全部で8つ写真があり、写真にクリックするともっと大きい写真が別のウィンドウで開きます。

A look from the outside.

Having fun with the prime lens.

Was over at my sisters taking photos of her new house and saw these that she got for her wedding anniversary.

Shot with the 50mm prime at f/1.6 and ISO 400. Contrast, saturation, vignetting and curves modified in Lightroom 2. Fun stuff :)

West Side Market 03/28/2009

Went back to the market with the new camera. I really need to do this on a weekday as opposed to a weekend. It’s craaaaazy on Saturday even at 9am!

I tried to get new shots indoors but it was tricky. Not just because of the crowd (though that made it hard too) but because it was sunny out! Let me explain…

The inside of the WSM has these windows really really high up. When it’s sunny out you basically get a spot light effect through the windows and it causes these nasty bright hot spots on certain stands and since all the food is behind glass, it’s pretty much impossible to get a clean shot. Unfortunate since many of the stands I wanted to go to had that problem!! So alas…not too many indoor shots… But since I was with N, while she was getting produce, I got to snap away without getting bothered by the sometimes ridiculously aggressive vendors there.

Anyway, this is my further attempt at what I like to call “food porn”. Yes. Not only is there “camera porn” but “food porn” as well. Enjoy :)

Most are behind the cut and click on the small images here and you’ll get a bigger one.

Today was West Side Market day for the first time in forever!

N went with me and I also took my new camera to give it a shot. Also because a coworker asked if I can see if I can get some photos for her as well.

Oddly enough because it was so sunny I had a hard time getting good shots indoors!! The sun kept coming through the windows putting bad hot spots and glare…oh well. But because N was with me and she had to do some shopping in the produce section I got to give it a shot there too. It’s harder to get shots in the produce section since the vendors there are far more aggressive and also because it is INCREDIBLY tight and crowded it’s hard not to get into anyone’s way… Oh well. Gotta work with what you got right?

More coming in a bit!

Just one day late… I didn’t get home until well past 1am…so yeah. Anyway.

This is just plain silly… I was at F’s with a few people and this was the description of one of her shows she recorded on her DVR.

It was for the series called “Classic Albums” where they go through every track on a classic album and interview the artists as well as the sound engineers and the producer and such too to really get a feel for what was going on during the production process. It’s really really cool. I actuall own (surprise surprise…I know…) the DVD for Iron Maiden’s Number of the Beast.

Project (by) 8pm – 03/26/2009

Today was a trip out to Blue Ridge Farm to take photos of Sarah and her horseback riding lesson.

The sun came out but she was indoors…which made it very very challenging since it’s low light…even with the new camera and a top of the line lens. Tricky…

But anyway, here’s one of the shots of her jumping. I only brought a 24-70mm lens so I couldn’t really zoom up very far. Next time I hope I can catch her practicing outdoors.

Impressive. It’s a smaller jump for sure but I’d be honest…if I did this I’d be flung off in an instant…so it’s pretty damn impressive to me!!

Ahh spring.

Look, even new pine cones!

Unfortunately for me this isn’t further signs of spring but of allergies to come. I know most people are not allergic to pine pollen but man…just over the last 10 years or so my seasonal allergies have gotten worse…and I swear I’m allergic to these guys… In Japan it was “sugi” season. Sugi is the Japanese cedar (not really a cedar) and it’s an evergreen and the pollen is known to cause severe seasonal allergies. That’s why you see people with masks on in many of my shots from Japan (that or they had a cold…). I am not affected by Japanese cedar pollen…but I swear I am with these…

Oh well.

Time to stock up on Claritin…

What I was doing last night at 1:45am…

Yu Darvish, the pitcher for Team Japan celebrating after striking out the last batter at 1:45am. Way to go Japan!!

And this is what I was doing tonight.

James Bond, cheese and crackers, and a glass or two of Forest Grove Cellars 2007 Syrah that I picked up when I was last at Portland. It is tasty!!

As is Daniel Craig. That is one sexy sexy man….
