Japan pictures: T-shirts and TV

No…no cherry blossoms yet. Working on it…really….

But in the meantime, I got some pictures of funny T-shirts (basically the whole “messed up English” ones) and screen pics from a TV show that was just on tonight. I’ve written about odd TV shows here before. This isn’t odd…but it still was interesting.

But first, T-shirts!

This time, the t-shirts came from when we went to AmeyaYokocho in Ueno. Some of you may remember this outdoor shopping area from a previous post that you can find here: http://www.timarai.com/blog/2006/06/29/old-school-open-air-shopping-in-tokyo-ameyokocho/

So, the first one isn’t really from Ameyayokocho. This one was from a T-shirt shop in the shopping center, Lazona, in Kawasaki.

I’m pretty sure they want to say “Keep Graphic Alive!” It was a graphic t-shirt store after all. I just like the random exclamation point after “keep” :)

This next one I like simply because you can tell it’s a total bootleg.

Has NOTHING to do with the Cleveland Indians yet there’s the mascot right there. They didn’t even TRY to modify it or draw it themselves. They totally lifted the image exactly as it is and printed it on a T-shirt with an odd saying. Granted, most Japanese will never know that that is the mascot of a US Major League team but then again, with a bunch of Japanese players out there now and the interest in Major League increasing, maybe this really IS a ploy to make people think this is authentic Cleveland Indians wear. Don’t know. Funny though.

And finally, it’s just an example of those “Engrish” t-shirts (a term I’m not a big fan of but you all know what I’m talking about).

I like the “consult”. You just don’t see that word on a t-shirt these days. …or ever for that matter.

Moving on to TV shows.

Tonight, after getting home from dinner and some errands (had to buy a box to ship my figures and such home and the like), I turned on the TV and they were on the last hour of a 2 hour eating contest show. It had 5 girls all known in Japan for their ability to eat massive quantities of food and they compete with each other until there is only 3 left for the final round. I missed the first round but I caught the semi final where the food of choice was maguro (tuna sushi) from Hawaii (this was set in Hawaii actually). Each plate held 5 standard sized sushi. The winner ate 130 pieces in 45 minutes….

Yes….130 pieces.

The winner of the semifinal was a girl nicknamed Gal Sone. Her real name is Natsuko Sone but got the nickname due to her dressing up in the “gal” style with the blond hair, white eye makeup, and dark skin. You can find out more about here here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gal_Sone

She’s thin too! A stick actually. But I’ve seen her eat over 6lbs. of alfredo pasta and other incredible feats.

So she made it to the final round with 2 other women both equally thin and the final round was ramen noodles. Mmmm. I mean, it’s GOOD but how much can you really eat? Apparently an incredible amount. Each serving was a standard sized serving but they got a break. So they don’t burn themselves, they did not have to drink the soup. But they did have to eat all of the noodles and the major toppings including a thin slice of Chinese roast pork.

I have to admit, I was glued to the TV. I mean, it’s just 3 girls pigging out but it was just amazing how much they were able to put away.

In the end, Gal Sone won for the 2nd year in a row with 16 bowls of ramen in 1 hour. Eeeeeeeeesh…

Here she is with all the bowls stacked up that she ate.

And here she is all happy to have won. The other girl ate 14. At one point Gal Sone actually had to stand up and jiggle a bit to reorient the noodles in her stomach. She admitted that the thin noodles were a problem for her since they tend to sit heavily in her stomach. But really…16?? Where did it all go?

And she’s still incredibly thin. One has to wonder if she purged afterwards but…well…I’m sure if she did they won’t say that to anyone. Actually after seeing her on another show where she competed in Thailand and she “practiced” the 2 days before by eating 4 or 5 people’s worth of food at dinner and also a whole bunch of noodles the day before too. So maybe she just has the metabolism of a mouse….lucky girl.

Anyway, here she is all happy. Hard to believe this girl can eat so much huh?

So that’s it. Hope you enjoyed :)
