Comiket Day 1
So, today was the opening day of what I believe is the biggest comic/manga convention around. For anyone that knows or has some vague interest in anime/manga culture, you may have heard of Comiket, short for Comic Market.
It’s a gigantic convention held twice a year, once in August and once during the last 3 days of the year, at Tokyo Big Sight. You may remember the location as the place where I was at earlier this year around October for a work trade show. It’s the bulding that looks like 4 inverted pyramids on stilts. When people say this convention is huge, they’re not kidding. I don’t really know how many exhibitors there are but the Comiket catalog that lists all of the exhibitors along with some ads and such is the size of a phone book…and weighs that much too.
The main bulk of the people setting up booths are what they call “circles”. They are groups of artists, all amateur, that make basically fan art and fan mangas. They are known as doujinshi and the genre ranges from anime inspired ones, to video game inspired ones all the way to original stories. Of course, within each genres are sub genres such as basic fan fiction, boys love, hentai, parody, mashups, CG, cosplay, software, and many many many many more (some descriptions of terms will follow). In the US, the term doujinshi tends to go hand in hand with hentai, or adult comics…many with subject matter that may be HIGHLY inappropriate in the US…but keep in mind…we’re a pretty repressed country when it comes to such things….
Over here though, the doujinshi movement is far wider than that. You can find stores, Mandarake for example, that has thousands of these thin 20 to 30 page fan comics in shelves for you to browse. And people will spend hours going through them. Most of these artists have web sites and some have some rabid fans. Some of these artists have eventually broken through into mainstream manga and some of their original works before they got big are worth hundres of dollars. Some of them are pretty crude but some have some amazing artwork. Due to this being in manga form, many people, even here, scoff at it and label it an “otaku” thing…and…well…it is. But the level of devotion and hard work is the equivalent of people with day jobs who write fiction at home. They then spend lots of money printing the books and paying for a table and setup up web site to advertise and try to at least break even.
But anyway…moving on to Comiket itself…
The thing is, each of the 3 days has different exhibitors coming in. The first day consists of hundreds if not thousands of stands selling doujinshi based on video games and specific anime franchises such as Gundam and Full Metal Alchemist. The second day tends to be more focused on shoujo comics (comics for girls…mostly romace stories and romantic comedies and so on). The third and final day consists of other anime and manga inspired works along with a good group of hentai (adult) works and also some home brew software as well…and these consists of games, art work cd’s, photo collections, and even sound tracks and demos.
Today my sister and I went to see what it’s all about and I will go back again on the final day on my own so I can browse at my leisure without worrying about whether my sister is enjoying things or if she’s dead tired from the crowd :)
When I say it’s crowded, I mean it. I personally have NEVER been somewhere so crowded before. My sister described the lobby in the west hall as looking like the airport during the holiday travel season when the planes are grounded and people are just milling about. Not that bad of an observation as most people are carrying gigantic bags FULL of comic books and other things they have bought and they all look tired as some of them has lined up since 5am. The only difference being, at an airport you don’t see people dressed up like anime girls and characters from video games like Vincent from Final Fantasy VII. (^_^)
The halls are also packed with people but the biggest crowd….the BIGGEST CROWD…is on the roof top plaza where the cosplayers are (that would be “costume play” for the layman). There is an enterance for people in costume and a different enterance for the general public and “photographers”. The is the only place photos are permitted anywhere in Comiket. Probably a good thing since you can barely move….people are striking poses, people are snapping pictures…if they allowed this on the convention floor it would be chaos…and it’s just surreal….you see some dude with a high end digital SLR camera and turn around only to be greeted by a guy in full armor looking like the character from Full Metal Alchemist only to turn around again and almost run smack into a girl dressed up like Chun Li from Street Fighter with her friend looking like Rikku from Final Fantasy X. Craaaaaaazy.
I have pictures but with it being a dialup connection here, I will wait to post the pictures until later…maybe I’ll take a trip to a neighborhood Starbucks one of these days to use their wireless. For the time being, here is one pic of the crowd on the rooftop plaza where the cosplayers were. This is only like 10% of the crowd….

Once inside, not only is there the 2 gigantic exhibition areas, there is also a floor for companies to put up a booth. These include manga stores like Tora No Ana and Melon Books but also anime companies and such. And yeah…once again…the crowd is horrific.
Now I know why people have told me that the Comket in the summer is literally “hell” or jigoku. Imagine if you will….tens of thousands of people all coming to the convention center after being packed in trains and walking for a good 10 minutes under an unrelentingly bright and hot sun where the average temperature in August can be in the 90′s with 80+% humidity….they all enter the convention hall that is airconditioned but not enough….and let’s be honest…as anyone who have been to conventions like GenCon can attest….the gaming/comic book/video game crowd is not known for hygene….. And the cosplay area…yeah…..see that crowd up there? Imagine that crowd with no shade under the hot sun and humidity. Oh…dear….god…..
But the winter one is bearable at least. I’ll see if I can get some pics again when I go back…we’ll see if I have the guts for it.
Now for some defintions…granted you can probably find all of these in Wikipedia but well…here are my own personal probably a bit biased definitions.
Cosplay – Short for “costume play”, it’s basicaly the act of dressing up as your favorite anime/manga/video game characters. This can be as simple as walking around in your old HS school uniform with an arm band to act the part of a HS drama anime or go all the way to desigining your own dresses or outfits, doing your hair as well and also creating the props. Some are quite elaborate and impressive. Some…well…let’s just say just because Lum from Urusei Yatsura wears a tiger skin bikini…so should you….. *ahem*… Oh…and you tend to see guys dressed up as girl characters too…it’s like Halloween…but with a theme.
Hentai – Japanese word for “pervert”. Sometimes called “ecchi” which is actually the Japanese pronounciation for the letter “H” which is…well…the first letter of the word hentai… Typically when not used against a person, it describes the adult genre for anime, manga, and video games. Of course, the sub genres are many…. The “naughty tentacles” type anime got infamous in the US due to some early anime imports (thus equating Japanese animation with deviant sex for ever and ever in many people’s minds….) but of course there are the school girls, the big girls, the incest, the teacher/student, and since many of these are in doujinshi form, characters from video games like “Tudus and Rikku (Final Fantasy X)”, “The Gundam Wing Boys with that one female character who’s name escapes me….”, “Goku and Buruma from Dragon Ball Z”, etc…. Oh…and one final genre…there is the “lolicon” genre… Basically underage stuff. As long as it’s just drawings it’s perfectly legal both here and in the US. Unlike the US, here it’s more tolerated and actually out in the open. The pros and cons of this is beyond the scope of this post….
Boys Love – This is a new genre that’s puzzling to me really. This is for the female audience and it’s like a direct response to sooo many girl on girl action happening in many of the hentai doujinshi out there for men. This is…as you have probably guessed by now…boy on boy… More specifically…pretty boy on pretty boy. Soooo we have the Gundam Wing boys “relaxing with eachother after a hard won battle”…the pretty boys from…well…choose your favorite Final Fantasy game as they’re all just full of metros anyway….so all the boys from Final Fantasy getting it on (for the readers in the know…I saw today a doujinshi of Cloud and Sephiroth in a loving embrace….ew ew ew)…and so on and so forth. For some reason certain girls dig this stuff. Ah well.
Anyway, more after my next trip out there in 2 days. Woooo.
