“So…what did you do on your Friday off?”

“…well…I went to the West Side Market and then took photos of water drops…”

“…um…what?”

Let me explain :)

You’ve seen those shots of water drops in print and commercials and such right? Well, turns out, you don’t need much to do it yourself! This ranks up there with the “moon photo” that I took a few weeks ago. It’s certainly not unique but I’ve always wanted to try it myself!

So. Here are some of the good ones! Each of these are linked to a bigger one so you can get a closer look. Cool huh?

Cool huh?? :)

The last two were taken with a different white balance. The first was with florescent light setting and the second with tungsten light setting. Neat effects without having to use any gels.

I saw how to do this on Strobist and had to give it a try!

Now for the technical stuff. You can skip this if you want but it’s a peek behind the scenes without having to go to Strobist and look for the article. Besides, I pretty much did everything they did anyway.

First off, the little dots that look kinda like bubble wrap that you see in the photo is actually the bottom of the paint tray that I was using… I found it in the garage… I should have picked one up at Lowes when I was there earlier today…

Anyway, here is a photo of the setup. Simple huh?

I filled up the paint tray with water. Black works best since it’s not super reflective and it’s a nice contrast to the flash. I had an old aluminum tripod so I used that to then clip a plastic bag with water it in over it. I then taped some paper onto a board and propped it up on some books and against the tripod so it was angled a bit downwards.

The only special thing you need is an off camera flash though you can probably do this with a really bright light too. You just need to aim it at the paper so it reflects downwards onto the water.

I mounted my camera onto my tripod and also hooked up my remote flash unit as well as a shutter switch so I won’t have to touch the camera to take the shots and it’s much easier standing off to the side so I can time the shots.

I used my 24-70mm f/2.8L lens set at an aperture of f/8 for good depth of field. The zoom was useful since I didn’t want any of my equipment too close to water… Most of my shots above are shot at 70mm though the w color ones are shot at 54mm.

The flash was set to manual at about 1/4 the output and since the synch speed is 1/250, that’s what I set my shutter speed to as well. ISO of 100 of course.

Once I had everything setup, I poked a tiiiiny hole in the plastic bag (make sure it’s tiny so it doesn’t come shooting out…how do I know?…well…yeah…I did it…) and then angled the camera so everything was in the frame. Then I used a pen and held it right where the water was dripping so I can focus on it. Once focused I turned off the auto focus and also made sure everything was on manual mode.

The rest is timing…and patience. Lots and lots of patience.

I did a combination of normal and high speed continuous shooting and shot off about 3 to 4 shots at a time before letting my flash recharge. I must have taken over 150 shots. Many are the same. The “crown” effect is incredibly difficult to take. It’s mostly just luck really… A bit of timing and lots and lots of luck.

But now I knwo I can do stuff like this, time to get creative!! Hmmm…what to do next… :)

Anyone with a DSLR and an off camera flash (or set it up with some bright lights, even one of those ridiculously bright flashlights will probably work) should give it a shot too!!

Start of a 3 day weekend! Yaaaaaaay.

So I realized that I really haven’t played with my remote flash unit much so today I quickly setup a scene on my dining room table and played around with it a little.

I like to call this “These are a Few of My Favorite Things” :)

Now for basic technical info…

This was shot at 70mm 1/250 f/4.0. I had a black cutting board in the background and a white foam board on camera right for a slight bounce onto the Johnny Walker. The flash had a diffuser on it and was held probably a good 2 feet below the front of the lens pointing up so the table blocked most of the light. The rest was getting the angle right so I can illuminate the symbol on the Remy Martin bottle. Now, I did do a quick blend job in Photoshop to bring out the 2 bottles in the background juuuust a little bit. I took another photo where the flash was pulled back a bit to get more illumination on the bottles in the background and then, in Photoshop, I simply used a layer mask and a soft brush at about 40% opaqueness to bring out the bottles.

I won’t say this is a masterpiece. But not bad for a quick 15 minute job :)

Starting off July with what has to be the WORST wall paper EVER. This is my friend Shelly’s guest bedroom at her new townhouse. This is what the previous owner had. Dear god. He had this whole “colonial British India” theme going on in the entire house. This was the worst…

…wow…

…the important thing here is I made it. Finished off June and I have yet to miss a day. Well..ok…there was ONE day that I posted a screen shot as opposed to a photo because I was sick as a dog… But it counts dammit!!

The bad thing is…I can’t use this idea anymore.

And I admit, I took this idea from someone else thas has been doing something similar to me.

And needless to say the whole “take a pic before 8pm” went out the window like on the 2nd day… But for 2009 I’m keeping the name…

But anyway, screw it. I made it. Even the metatag on the image states I took it on 6/30. Ha!

…now…what the hell to take a photo of tomorrow…

There is some kind of mini carnival being setup in a shopping center right by work. The typical rides and such and shady looking people chain smoking and setting stuff up.

…these things always looked a bit…scary. But also a bit nostalgic. …though as an adult, looking at these now…I do NOT want to ride these things…

But I decided to go for my favorite old-timey sepia look.

The last two I did some very high contrast and exposure to get the look. I kinda like it :)

…I was even more lazy today.

I’m actualy doing laundry though so I’m not totally a waste of a life… But yeah. I was pretty close. So, once again, it’s shots of flowers for today. I promise to have more meaningful photos once I actually do things that are more…well…meaningful…

Anyway, the lilies outside my front door that my neighbor planted finally bloomed :)

Late night last night so I’m posting this a day late before I head out to the market.

Cookout at my friend F’s house. She moved in last October or so and now her backyard was in full bloom :)

(all of these are linked to a bigger pic – except the meat one…)

First though, a shot of the bush outside my backyard…

And now for F’s flowers :)

Cool lawn ornament that glows at night.

Mmmm…summer time cook out…mmmm… (reminds me that I need to finally get a damn grill this year…)

Nasty storm today. Lost electricity for a good 3 or so hours and it was pretty intense to the point where I sat in my car in my driveway for a good 10 minutes rather than try to run to my front door…

But once the storm blew by and electricity came back on I went out to put the car in the garage and looked up at the sky. It was beautiful!!

No photo can do it justice but…yeah…the layers were amazing.

Sarah and her New Horse

So Sarah got a new horse. Well…her family is leasing the horse with another family. More affordable that way. But still, a new horse none the less! It’s an Arabian. That’s where my horse knowledge ends… And I can’t remember the name… Ooops…

Anyway, got some photos of her at the farm :)

Here she is trotting along.

And some action shots. I like the tail curl on the first one :)

Here she is exhausted after the lesson and staring off into space trying to cool down.

A cool shot of her boots (same as the photo of the day from yesterday)

And her chilling out afterwards :) (ok ok…that’s my glass of wine she was carrying for me since I had to go down some rocks to get some shots)

:)

Nothing in particular
